Are local governments in Virginia using Twitter?

A recent analysis of Twitter content found that local governments in Virginia are mainly ignoring the popular microblogging website. The research study showed that only 17% of county, city and town governments had Twitter accounts. Tweets averaged at around one per day, and only five of the accounts had more than 1000 followers.

The study was co-authored with Marcus Messner, an assistant professor in the School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University. Research results will be presented along with social media and community building guidelines at the fall conference of the Virginia Government Communicators in November.

Marie Fox of Windy Acres Farm in Culpeper, Va. uses a little more than five acres to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs. She also raises goats and chickens and has become an avid beekeeper—all in addition to having a full-time job. The following two videos originally appeared in an earlier visual presentation, Embracing Virginia’s agriculture, but have been re-posted individually below.

Videos were created as part of a converged media applications course at Virginia Commonwealth University under the direction of Dr. Timothy Bajkiewicz.
